Accumulation of clutter in our lives, both physically and mentally, can easily occur. If not dealt with promptly, clutter becomes overwhelming, leading to stress and a sense of being out of control.

Decluttering is not just about tidying up our spaces; it’s about creating a more organised, peaceful, and efficient life. In this blog post, I discuss practical tips that help us declutter our lives and make room for what truly matters.

01. Make a List

Before decluttering, it’s important to create a priority list. We should identify areas that need immediate attention, such as physical spaces in our homes or workplaces, digital spaces like our email and message inboxes, files and folders on our computers, and even mental spaces like our daily schedules. Prioritising based on which causes the most difficulty and addressing those first will have the biggest impact on our lives.

02. Set Goals

Decluttering is a demanding task, and taking on too much at once can lead to disappointment later. Therefore, it’s important to identify simple, achievable tasks and turn them into manageable goals. For instance, when decluttering our homes, it’s best to start with one room or even just one cupboard at a time. This approach helps to stay motivated and prevents potential feelings of being overwhelmed.

03. Create a Schedule

Consistency is crucial for success in any process. Creating a schedule enables us to declutter bit by bit and regularly. Depending on our goals, the schedule could be a specific day of the week, a particular hour of the day, and so on. Having a schedule allows us to work in an organized manner and also helps us measure the overall progress.

04. Take Minimalistic Approach

Minimalism is about distinguishing between what we really need and what we can let go. Having a minimalistic approach is key to decluttering. While evaluating a particular item, we must ask ourselves what value that item brings to our lives. If it brings no value, then we must let it go. This approach helps us make informed choices about what we keep and what we discard.

05. The Four Box Method

The Four-Box Method is a unique decluttering technique that involves sorting items into four categories: Keep, Donate, Sell, and Trash. The idea is that as we go through our belongings, we place each item into one of these boxes. This helps us make clear decisions about what to do with each item and prevents us from simply moving clutter from one place to another.

06. Digitise

Important documents, files, journals, magazines, and books contribute significantly to clutter. Digitizing these essential items and storing them in a reliable cloud storage or digital locker allows for easy retrieval when needed. Additionally, investing in a high-quality e-reader device or app and switching to digital versions of journals, magazines, and books can help prevent future clutter accumulation.

07. Follow One-In-One-Out Rule

For every new item we acquire, we should discard one old item. This is known as the One-In-One-Out Rule. Diligently following this rule significantly reduces clutter accumulation. It also helps promote meaningful spending, as it’s not always easy to let go of an old item. This rule is particularly effective for clothes, shoes, books, etc.

08. Decluttering the Wardrobe

A cluttered wardrobe can make getting dressed a time-consuming and stressful experience. One way to declutter our wardrobe is by adopting a capsule wardrobe approach. This means curating a small collection of versatile, high-quality clothes and dresses that we love and wear regularly. We can also consider donating or selling items that no longer fit or that we haven’t worn in the past year.

09. Decluttering the Workspace

Creativity and productivity can never be fostered in a cluttered workplace. We must take the time to organize our desks, files, office supplies, etc. Only the essential items must be kept within reach, and the rest should be stowed in some safe storage space. A clean and organized workspace helps us stay focused and be efficient.

10. Streamlining Our Daily Routine

A disorganized daily schedule results in a cluttered life. We should streamline our everyday routine by identifying and removing unnecessary tasks or commitments. We should concentrate on what genuinely counts and brings us happiness. This may involve declining certain responsibilities or handing tasks over to others.

11. Seek Help

If we feel overwhelmed by the decluttering process, it’s best to seek professional help. Professional organizers can offer expert advice and hands-on assistance to help us declutter effectively. Additionally, there are plenty of books, blogs, and online courses available that provide guidance and inspiration.

12. Celebrate Wins

Decluttering is a journey, not a destination. It’s important to recognize the progress we make, no matter how small, and appreciate the positive changes in our lives as we reduce clutter. Acknowledging our achievements boosts our motivation and encourages us to continue on our decluttering journey.

Less Stuff Means Less to Clean, Less to Organised, Less to Store, Less Mess.

Conclusion

Cultivating a decluttered life involves creating an environment that promotes well-being and allows individuals to focus on what is truly essential. By practising mindfulness, setting achievable goals, and maintaining consistency, we can effectively improve our physical and mental surroundings.

It’s important to remember that the goal is not perfection, but rather steady progress. We should embrace the process and enjoy the benefits of a decluttered life.
