Trust and credibility are the foundational elements of any relationship. As leaders, our actions, no matter how small, can have a significant impact on various stakeholders. Trust and credibility are especially crucial for leaders. If our team members do not trust us, they will feel sceptical or hesitant to follow our directions, resulting in half-hearted efforts and low success rates.
Leaders need to exert additional efforts to establish trust and credibility with both their subordinates and superiors. Building trust and credibility requires time, consistent effort, and a commitment to authenticity, integrity, and empathy.
The process of building trust is an interesting one, but it begins with yourself, with what I call self-trust, and with your own credibility, your own trustworthiness. If you think about it, it’s hard to establish trust with others if you can’t trust yourself.
Stephen Covey
In this blog, I will discuss several strategies that leaders can employ to achieve these goals.
Lead by Example
When leaders continuously demonstrate behaviours, values and standards of the same level that we expect from our team members, it creates a positive impact. People love to follow the leaders who walk the talk rather than those who only preach. Some tips:
- Always be on time, meet deadlines and honour promises
- Display a strong work ethic and commitment to the team’s goals
- Show commitment to the organisation’s values and demonstrate them in the decision-making process
When Satya Nadella became CEO of Microsoft in 2014, the company had a reputation for being a strict and competitive workplace. Nadella emphasised collaboration, inclusivity, and continuous learning. By embodying these values himself, he set a powerful example for the entire organisation. His leadership by example enabled him to transform the company’s culture.
Be Consistent
Leaders who are reliable and consistent in their actions and decisions build a reputation for being dependable. When team members know what to expect from their leader, it reduces uncertainty and anxiety, creating a more stable and trusting work environment. A few tips:
- Be consistent in applying rules, policies and disciplinary measures
- Honour commitments and promises
- Maintain regular communication and support for the team, especially during tough times
Throughout her time as CEO of PepsiCo, Indra Nooyi consistently emphasised “Performance with Purpose,” aiming to balance financial performance with sustainability and social responsibility. She implemented long-term strategies to promote healthier product choices, environmental sustainability, and workforce diversity. By consistently aligning her actions with the company’s stated values, Nooyi earned the trust of employees, customers, and investors, solidifying her credibility as a leader dedicated to sustainable growth.
Create a Shared Vision
In many large organisations, team members often end up working in silos. While everyone may be excelling in their respective roles, they do not share a common goal. This often leads to discord among various teams. As leaders, we need to work hard to align all efforts with the direction of the organisation’s vision. This not only acts as a force multiplier and yields tremendous results, but also fosters a sense of purpose and belonging among team members. A few strategies to make this happen:
- Communicate the organisation’s Vision, Mission and Goals
- Explain to the team members how their goals align with those of the organisation
- Share the achievements of a particular team with the rest of the organisation, emphasising its significance to the organisation’s goals

Mary Barra has emphasised building a shared vision of transforming General Motors into a leader in electric and autonomous vehicles. She aligned the company’s goals with a clear mission of creating a zero-emissions future. By clearly communicating this vision and investing in the necessary resources and innovation, Barra has gained the trust and commitment of employees, customers, and investors. Her credibility as a leader is reinforced by her consistent actions to drive this vision forward.
Empower Teams by Delegation
Decentralising decision-making by delegating meaningful tasks to our subordinates goes a long way in establishing trust. By delegating, we give responsibility and opportunities to grow to our team members. This builds an environment of mutual respect and confidence. We can achieve it by:
- Delegating tasks to the team members according to their skills and strengths
- Encouraging team members to work independently and make decisions on their own
- Support team members if they go wrong while working on the delegated tasks with guidance and resources

At SpaceX, Elon Musk has empowered his engineers to take risks and experiment, which was crucial for the company’s groundbreaking achievements in space exploration. This trust was evident when Musk gave his team the freedom to redesign the Falcon 1 rocket after repeated failures. His faith in their abilities not only built trust within the team but also established SpaceX as a credible player in the space industry.
Admit Mistakes
Everybody makes mistakes, but how we handle our mistakes significantly impacts our credibility. The same also applies to leaders. Admitting mistakes and taking responsibility instead of covering them or shifting the blame shows that leaders are human too. It also builds a culture of accountability and integrity. A few steps to achieve it:
- Be transparent about the reasons behind the mistake
- The focus should be on finding a solution and not just assigning the blame
- Develop a culture of using failures as learning opportunities

In 2011, Netflix decided to split its DVD rental and streaming services, resulting in a significant price increase. This led to customer outrage and a steep decline in subscribers. Reed Hastings quickly recognised the mistake, took full responsibility, and publicly apologised. Netflix reversed its decision, and Hastings’ openness to admitting the error and learning from it helped rebuild trust with customers and investors.
Always Do the Right Thing
Professional integrity is crucial for every leader. Leaders must uphold their ethical standards even in adverse situations to build credibility. Here are a few steps to achieve it:
- Always act in line with ethical standards and the values of the organisation
- Avoid biases and be just and fair in decision-making
- Take a stand against unethical behaviour, even if it is uncomfortable

Warren Buffett’s emphasis on ethical behaviour, transparency, and long-term value creation has been instrumental in building trust with shareholders, employees, and the public. Buffett’s decision to invest only in businesses that align with his ethical standards and his willingness to take tough stands against unethical practices are examples of how integrity is vital to leadership credibility.
Conclusion
Building trust and credibility in leadership requires consistency, transparency, integrity, and a commitment to empowering others. Leaders who focus on these core principles create a positive and productive work environment where trust flourishes and credibility is established. Leading by example, admitting mistakes, empowering the team, and demonstrating ethical behaviour are essential for cultivating a culture of trust that drives success and inspires loyalty.
Trustworthy leaders inspire their teams, drive engagement, and create environments where employees feel valued and empowered. By implementing these strategies, leaders can build lasting trust and credibility, ultimately leading to greater organisational success.
